Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) for Cataract Patients
Experience Precision Vision with MOA’s Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL)
As a part of our cataract management services, Medical Optometry America works with Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL), a groundbreaking advancement in ophthalmic technology, revolutionizing cataract surgery. Unlike traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs), the LAL is a unique implant that allows noninvasive, postoperative optical adjustments to be made. This innovative lens provides the never-before-seen ability to customize visual outcomes AFTER surgery is complete, making it more than twice as likely the patient will have the 20/20 vision they’re expecting, thus reducing the worry about being “locked-in” to the wrong lens.
What Are Light Adjustable Lens(LAL)?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a state-of-the-art intraocular lens for cataract surgery patients. Unlike traditional fixed-focus lenses, the LAL introduces a pioneering adjustable feature that allows for postoperative modifications to fit each patient’s vision needs.
This innovative technology utilizes a photo-responsive material in the lens that reacts to UV light. UV light treatments can be applied to alter the curvature and power of the lens precisely, address any residual refractive errors, and optimize visual acuity. The LAL represents a significant advancement in cataract surgery, providing surgeons and patients with dynamic and adaptable solutions for achieving “Lasik-like results.”
How Do Adjustable Lenses Work?
LAL lense are crafted from a photosensitive material designed to undergo precise changes in response to ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, enhancing visual acuity. This innovative lens technology is complemented by the Light Delivery Device (LDD), a non-invasive tool that delivers UV light with utmost precision.
The LDD allows for exact lens reshaping based on the specific visual correction required to achieve your customized prescription. This advanced interplay between the LAL and the LDD ensures a tailored approach to optimizing your vision, providing a dynamic solution for addressing individual refractive needs with unparalleled precision and accuracy.
MOA is proud to be a VisionLOCK Adjustment Center, part of the MOA Open Access Network of medical eye care offices equipped with the latest LDD. MOA Medical Directors are trained and certified to provide LAL Adjustments.
Are you a Good Candidate for LAL?
Good candidates for LALs lenses typically include patients who:
- Want to avoid dependence on glasses.
- Want LASIK-like results.
- Have previously had refractive surgeries such as LASIK and PRK.
- Are particular about their vision.
How Long Do Light Adjustable Lenses Last?
The Light Adjustable Lens is designed to provide long-term vision correction following cataract surgery. Once the LAL lenses are implanted and the final UV light adjustments are made, the changes to the lens are permanent. This means the customized visual correction is expected to last for the rest of the patient’s life unless other eye conditions develop. The LAL is made from durable, biocompatible materials intended to withstand normal wear and tear inside the eye without degrading over time.
While the LAL itself is designed to last a lifetime, at MOA, we recommend that our patients continue attending their annual eye physical exams to monitor overall eye health and address any other conditions that may arise.
Although the LAL provides long-term vision correction, it does not prevent other eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or retinal diseases. Ongoing eye care is important to maintain overall eye health and ensure the continued success of the LAL.

LAL FAQs
What to Expect After Surgery?
In the days following your cataract surgery, you should notice an improvement in vision because the clouding of the natural lens has been removed and replaced with a clear implant allowing more light to enter the eye and be appropriately focused. The implant will be close to optimal for your eye but it won’t be your “final” vision. The lens can be adjusted to account for any defocus beginning 17 days after your second eye surgery. In some cases, it may be appropriate to wait longer to allow for more healing or better refractive stability.
Adjustments use a non-invasive, low-energy UV light application. The LAL implants are sensitive to certain wavelengths of UV light, which can exist in ambient lighting. You must wear your provided UV protective glasses at all times (clear for indoors, tinted for outdoors) to ensure there are no aberrant adjustments to the lens from ambient light.
How does the LAL differ from traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs)?
Unlike traditional IOLs with fixed focal points, the LAL offers a groundbreaking adjustable feature. This enables postoperative modifications, allowing ophthalmic surgeons to fine-tune the lens power and address any residual refractive errors after cataract surgery. It also reduces the worry of being “locked-in” to the wrong lens.
Is the UV light used in the adjustment process harmful to the eyes?
No, the UV light used for adjusting the LAL lenses is carefully controlled and non-invasive. The treatments are performed in a controlled environment by eye care professionals to ensure safety and efficacy.
